Châteaux  & Gardens

There are so many beautiful Châteaux and gardens in this area of Normandy, you are really spoilt for choice.

Below is a simple list of the ones really worth going out of your way for.

Château de St Germain de Livet

10km

A delightful moated chateau that combines a Renaissance facade with a fortified external wall, turrets and a Normandy manor house facing onto an internal courtyard. Peacocks, both blue and white, adorn the formal walled gardens at the entrance. The last owners of the chateau who bought it in 1922 and passed it on to the town of Lisieux in 1957, were descended from Jean-Henri Riesener, cabinet maker to Marie Antoinette. The chateau also has furniture from the great French nineteenth century painter Eugene Delacroix, who was first cousin to the painter Leon Riesener, Jean-Henri's grandson.

Château de Vendeuvre

17km

With spectacular gardens full of hidden "water surprises", this is a stunning château that will be fun for children and adults alike. Inside the château, you can see how it might once have been furnished. Just as quirky as its gardens, the château houses an exquisite collection of doll-house miniatures owned by the Comtesse de Vendeuvre - who can often be seen greeting visitors.

Château de Canon

20km

An 18th-century château which overlooks an ornamental lake surrounded by tree-lined avenues and walled chartreuses (open-air greenhouses and flower gardens).

Château de Crevecoeur

20km

A mediaeval chateau dating back to the 12th century with a motte and bailey, entered across a drawbridge. The outer bailey area of the castle has a farm, dovecote and barn with half-timbered buildings dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. There is also a Romanesque chapel dating from the 12th century and a 15th century manor house. In the summer there are frequent events for visitors, including mediaeval entertainment and the recreation of life around the chateau in past centuries.
