Local Towns

All a short distance from Le Fresnot, these towns offer a delightful welcome to Normandy country life. Have breakfast in a street cafe, visit an antiques market or buy local farmers produce.

St Pierre sur Dives

8km

A traditional food market, one of the largest in the region, in the imposing medieval market hall and on the surrounding town square. The beamed market hall is a 16th century reconstruction of the original 12th century building which was badly damaged in World War 2.

Livarot

10km

Livarot traces its roots back to the 15th century and has been a bustling market town for over 400 years. Nowadays it is a cheese and cider-making hub. One of its most recent claims to fame was as the departure town for a Normandy stage of the Tour de France, an event that drew thousands of visitors to its charming main street.

Lisieux

20km

A large market town, Lisieux is the capital of the Pays d'Auge area. The Basilica of Sainte Thérèse de Lisieux stands over the town. There is a train station with connections to the coast and Paris.

Rouen

120 kilometers

Rouen is a historic town with a mediaeval quarter and a remarkable cathedral, famously painted by impressionist Claude Monet. It was a fortified city in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and a flourishing port in the nineteenth century, when French novelist Gustave Flaubert lived there. It was badly damaged during the second world war, first by fighting between French and German forces in 1940 and then by Allied bombing in 1944, but has been extensively restored. Its city hall, courts of justice and cathedral are among the finest in northern France.
