Nature Notes


Birds seen today, during a 1-hour walk in the field this evening.

Scarce pickings for this time of year but a good mix of winter and spring birds.

BIRD HIGHLIGHTS

  • 1 Swallow - flying over

  • 1 Yellowhammer - calling infrequently, but not seen

  • 1 Hawfinch - flying over the garden poplars

  • 1 Serin - in neighbour's garden, same tree as yesterday

  • 2 Firecrest - working their way along the hedgerows, showing well

  • 1 Short-Toed Treecreeper - seen quite well in the hedgerows

OTHER BIRDS

  • 7 Herring Gull - a flock high over the field

  • 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker - calling

  • 1 Green Woodpecker - calling

  • 2 Chiffchaffs - singing in the woodland

  • 1 Mistle Thrush

  • 5 Redwing

  • 1 Blackcap - singing, not seen

  • 1 Dunnock

  • 1 White Wagtail - heard calling overhead

  • 1 House Sparrow

  • 4 Buzzard - some aerial displaying

  • 1 Wren

  • 4 Wood Pigeons

  • 3 Robins

  • 2 Starlings

  • 1 Magpie

  • 1 Blue Tit

  • 1 Great Tit

  • 2 Carrion Crows

  • Goldfinches - heard
