Nature Notes

Birds seen today, during a 1h00 walk in the field at midday. Apart from for pigeons and blackbirds, I was very reliant on my ears for most of these sightings.

BIRD HIGHLIGHTS

  • 1 Lesser-Spotted Woodpecker - frequently drumming and calling territorially on the woodland edge, but despite lots of searching I couldn't find it.

  • 3 Marsh tits - very vocal on woodland edge and in the brambles

  • 1 GREATER WHITETHROAT - heard only, spurred into singing as soon as the Marsh Tits flew into the brambles, where it was very elusively skulking.

OTHER BIRDS

  • 1 Blackcap - heard only

  • 2 Chiffchaffs

  • 2 Jays

  • 1 Short-Toed Treecreeper - heard only in the field hedgerows, but very elusive. On reflection, may have been a Firecrest doing a good impression.

  • 1 Great-Spotted Woodpecker

  • 1 Green Woodpecker

  • 1 Bullfinch - heard only

  • 1 Greenfinch

  • 1 Dunnock

  • 2 Buzzards

  • 1 Song Thrush

  • 2 Mistle Thrushes

  • 1 House Sparrow

  • 3 Chaffinches

  • 1 Wren

  • 1 White Wagtail

  • 2 Robins

  • 1 Magpie

  • 6 Carrion Crows

  • 2 Starlings

  • 4 Blackbirds

  • 6 Wood Pigeons

See Le Fresnot's eBird site for all past checklists.
